Wine Tasting with WALT Wines: The Many Clones of Bob's Ranch

11:30am–12:30pm | The American Club® The Winery Bar

Presenter: Tony Gatti, Hall Family Wines

Tucked away on the edge of the Petaluma Gap on the Sonoma Coast lies Bob’s Ranch. Named after Kathryn Walt Hall’s father, Bob’s Ranch is the result of a wild viticultural experiment by Paul Hobbs. This vineyard is comprised of 43 vineyard blocks on 72 acres. What makes this vineyard so unique is that it is planted with 17 unique Pinot Noir clones and heritage selections and nine of Chardonnay. The ultimate vinous spice kit!

The cool climate influence from the Pacific Coast, via the Petaluma Wind Gap, offers brisk winds and cooler temperatures than its northern Russian River Valley neighbors. The wind keeps fruit clusters small, and pollenates the berries at different times resulting in small and larger berries on the same cluster – we call this cluster morphology ‘chicks and hens’ (in France it’s called millerandage). The unusual formation is sought after by winemakers, as it develops intense flavors in the small berries, and freshness in the larger berries.
